Nourishing Our Community
Fighting Food Insecurity Together
Since 2021, our market has proudly participated in the Nourishing Communities Program, contributing over $50,000 to households in Tata and the surrounding area to combat food insecurity. This initiative not only provides food insecure households with access to more food sources but also ensures they receive high-quality, locally grown ingredients in a welcoming community setting to nourish their bodies and souls. Along with that, the funds spent by participants go directly to our local farmers, food producers and artisans to support our local economy. Together, we are fostering a healthier community. Thank you for your interest in being a part of this mission.
Please check out the Farmers' Markets of Nova Scotia website for more info on the incredible impact the program has had throughout Nova Scotia.
The Program
HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?
Farmers’ markets partner with social organizations in their community. These organizations help identify households experiencing food insecurity to participate in the program.
Participants are given an anonymous alternative currency—or “food bucks”—that can be redeemed at any vendor stall at their local farmers’ market. This currency is already in circulation at the market, so participants cannot be publicly identified.
Vendors exchange the “food bucks” with their market manager to receive payment for the products they sold, thereby increasing revenue for small, local businesses.
